Key Facts

Mauritius has a well developed medical devices industry manufacturing a comprehensive range of quality products. Several transnational corporations and multinational companies like Hanna Instruments, Carl Zeiss Inc, Laboratoire Pérouse, Pérouse Plastie and Natec Medical have chosen Mauritius to set up their production units. Most companies operating within the medical devices industry in Mauritius are ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certified. Likewise, companies exporting to the EU and the USA satisfy the EU GMP and the US FDA requirements.

Investment Opportunities

A comprehensive range of activities may be undertaken in Mauritius, which includes contract manufacturing, sub-contracting, private label manufacturing, assembling and sterilisation, amongst others.

• With the rapid growth in the level of healthcare worldwide, longer lifespan of populations, enhanced health consciousness and sensitivity to environmental problems, the global market for greener medical disposables is increasing rapidly. Mauritius is poised to emerge as an attractive platform for environment-friendly manufacture of medical disposables, which includes surgical including syringes, gloves, blades, clamps, gauze sponges, sterile packaging, bandages, disinfecting materials, test strips, stents, disposable dishes, and many others.
• Mauritius has an impressive record in its manufacturing sector, with preferential trade agreements (like SADC, COMESA, AGOA), thus generating opportunities for the manufacture of surgical knives, forceps, chisels, gouges, cauteries, blood glucose monitors, electronic and infrared thermometers, resuscitators, blood transfusion sets, etc.
• Opportunities also exist for the manufacture of orthopaedic devices, especially to meet the demands of a growing sports industry.
• Several companies are already engaged in the manufacture of electro-medical and electro-therapeutic devices. With a strong base and qualified manpower in electronic industries, there are opportunities for the manufacture of devices such as pacemakers, hearing aids, neurotransmitters, electrocardiographs, etc.
• The manufacture of implantable devices is gradually gaining momentum in Mauritius, with companies producing silicone breasts, dental crowns and ophthalmic devices. This is paving the way to the manufacture of auditory implants, artificial discs, artificial limbs, surgical implants, cosmetic implants, dental implants and fittings.
• With the new facilities for cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries, there will be a local as well as an export market for different types of prostheses (eyes, voice, breast, myoelectrical, ophthalmic, etc.)
